VIC: University defends demolition proposal
MELBOURNE, Jan 10 AAP - The University of Melbourne needed room to expand because it was
one of the smallest campuses in Australia, its acting vice-chancellor said today.
Professor Boris Schedvin defended proposals for partial demolition of 15 terrace houses in
a square in inner suburban Carlton, but he acknowledged their historic significance.
"The square itself is unique in the sense that its proportions are very elegant and
graceful, on the principles of some of the London squares that emerged in the 19th century,"
